Step 1: Link a Secondary Card to Your Primary Wallet
Most travelers rely on a single international card inside Alipay or WeChat Pay. That's a single point of failure. Instead, open your primary wallet and add a second card. For example, if you connected your Visa credit card, also add a Mastercard debit. This way, if one card triggers a fraud block or exceeds a daily limit, the other can take over.
To add a card in Alipay: Go to Me > Bank Cards > Add Card. In WeChat Pay: Open Me > Pay > Wallet > Cards. Both support major international cards—Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Diners Club, and Discover. After adding, make a small transaction (like a 1 RMB purchase) to test it works. Do this before your trip, not during.
Step 2: Set a Second Wallet as Backup
Don't put all your eggs in one app. Install both Alipay and WeChat Pay, and link different cards to each. For instance, use Alipay with your Visa and WeChat Pay with your Mastercard. If one app goes down (network issues, account freeze), you have the other. This is especially important because some merchants accept only one wallet—small restaurants often only have Alipay QR codes, while some convenience stores prefer WeChat Pay.
Step 3: Carry Physical Cash and a Prepaid Travel Card
Even with two wallets, you need offline fallbacks. Keep around 500–1000 RMB in small bills (5, 10, 20 yuan notes) for places that have network outages or simply prefer cash—like some temple entrances, taxi drivers, or rural bus stops. Also consider a prepaid travel card like the China UnionPay prepaid card (available at some airports or as a digital card in an app). These can be loaded before your trip and used at ATMs or for card-present payments, which work even if your phone battery dies.
Step 4: Enable Offline Payment Features
Alipay and WeChat Pay offer “offline payment” modes that generate a QR code valid for a short period without internet. In Alipay, this is called “Offline Payment” under the wallet settings. Activate it by going to Me > Settings > Payment > Offline Payment. Do the same in WeChat Pay: Me > Pay > Enable Offline Payment. This feature is a lifesaver in subways or tunnels where signal drops.
