Step 1: Get Alipay or WeChat Pay Ready Before You Leave Home
Both apps allow international users to register using a foreign phone number and passport. You cannot do this at a vending machine because the verification process takes time and sometimes requires a one-off video call. Do it at least a week before your trip.
One concrete scenario: A traveler we helped was stuck at Beijing Zoo. They had Alipay installed but never linked a card. At the vending machine, they scanned the QR code, got an error saying “payment method not set,” and couldn’t proceed. They had no cash. Don’t be that traveler.
Step 2: Top Up or Link Funds for Small Purchases
Even with a card linked, some vending machine transactions (especially below 1 RMB) may fail if the card issuer declines small-authorization charges. Alipay and WeChat Pay suggest topping up a small balance via a transfer from a domestic Chinese friend, but for short-term travelers, that’s not practical. The safer route is to link a credit card that has no foreign transaction fees and confirm with your bank that you’ll be in China.
Step 3: At the Machine, Follow the On-Screen Prompts
Every vending machine has a digital screen. You select items, then you see a QR code. Open Alipay or WeChat Pay, tap “Scan” (on the home screen), and point your camera at the code. The app will show an amount and ask you to confirm. Tap “Pay.” Within seconds, the machine dispenses your item.
Most common failure point: The machine’s QR code is often a static sticker, not a dynamic code. Some travelers try to scan it with the phone’s default camera app. That does not work. You must open the payment app’s scan feature. Also, if the screen is cracked or the QR code is faded, you can’t pay.
Step 4: If the First Code Fails, Look for a Second Code
Some Beijing vending machines have two QR codes: one for Alipay, one for WeChat Pay. If you only have one app installed and that code fails, check if there is a separate code for a different service. Sometimes the machine also accepts UnionPay QR. If all digital options fail, you need a backup.
